Mr. Abelow is a Member in the firm’s Litigation practice group, where he represents clients in complex business disputes, including unfair competition, insurance coverage, breach of contract, real property, and broker-dealer cases. 

Clients particularly turn to Mr. Abelow for assistance in collecting judgments, for litigation in the shadow of bankruptcy, and for adversary proceedings in bankruptcy court.

Mr. Abelow has represented clients in both federal and state trial courts, as well as numerous mediations and settlement negotiations.

Mr. Abelow’s prior experience includes serving with the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection in Washington, D.C, where he focused on identity theft policy and enforcement. Prior to that, he represented clients in complex commercial litigation, insurance coverage, and government contract disputes.

Mr. Abelow graduated summa cum laude from Washington & Lee University School of Law, in 2000, where he was a member of the Law Review and was recognized as the outstanding member of the Alderson federal prison camp legal clinic.

After graduation, Mr. Abelow served as a law clerk to the Honorable E.A. Van Graafeiland of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Mr. Abelow’s current representative engagements include:

  • Won trial for broker-dealer against false allegations that broker-dealer did not place order for securities;
  • Jenkins v. Osborn, No. 08-1480-V in the Chancery Court for Davidson County, Tennessee (with Bill Harbison and John Farringer, successfully obtained summary judgment against multi-million dollar claim for supposed engineering improvements to jointly-owned property);
  • Venezia v. 12th & Division Properties, No. 09-00430 in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee (with Phil Cramer and Webb Campbell, obtained dismissal of rescission claims on an issue of first impression under a federal land use statute);
  • Gonce v. Hall, No. 08 C2479-V in the Circuit Court for Davidson County, Tennessee (successfully argued for dismissal of individual purchasers of company in breach of contract case brought by sellers of company);
  • Crabtree v. Goetz, No. 08-0939 in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, (successfully obtained preliminary injunction against State of Tennessee showing violations of Americans with Disabilities Act);
  • Haren v. UBS, No. 06-0408 in the Chancery Court for Hamilton County, Tennessee (with Sam Funk, obtained grant of partial summary judgment for broker-dealer on issues under Uniform Commercial Code)

Mr. Abelow has taught continuing legal education courses on pre-judgment attachment and other remedies to obtain control of defendants’ property before a final judgment, and, with Andree Blumstein, on summary judgment practice in Tennessee after the Tennessee Supreme Court’s decision in Hannan.

Mr. Abelow is a member of the Tennessee Bar, and is admitted to the United States District Courts for the Middle and Eastern Districts of Tennessee. Mr. Abelow is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute.
