MICHEL G. KAPLAN, a member of Sherrard & Roe, PLC, practices in the areas of taxation, estate planning and tax exempt organizations. Mr. Kaplan is a Fellow and a former Regent of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and previously served as one of three at large Regents who serve on ACTEC’s Executive Committee. He also serves as Chair of ACTEC’s Bylaws and Manual Committee and is a members of its Charitable Planning and Exempt Organization Committee and Communications Committee. Mr. Kaplan is a director of the ACTEC Foundation and is chairman of its Audit Committee. He is a member in the Section of Taxation of the American Bar Association and is on its Committee on Tax Exempt Organizations. He is a member of the Tennessee Probate Study Committee of the Tennessee Bar Association. He is past member of the Alumni Board of Trustees of Vanderbilt University Law School; the Board of Directors of the Nashville Estate Planning Council; the Board of Directors of the Nashville Bar Association; chairman of the Tax Section of the Tennessee and Nashville Bar Associations; the chairman of the Tax, Probate and Trust Law Section of the Tennessee Bar Association; and the Board of Trustees (and President) of the Tennessee Federal Tax Institute, Inc.
Mr. Kaplan represents numerous public charitable organizations and private foundations. Mr. Kaplan is a frequent lecturer on taxation, estate planning, tax-exempt organizations and charitable giving techniques to both professional organizations and other groups. He has also written extensively in the areas of taxation and estate planning and has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Worth, Money and Lawyers Weekly.
He is listed in the Best Lawyers in America in the areas of taxation, estate planning and exempt organizations. He has been named by The Best Lawyers in America® as the “Nashville Best Lawyers Tax Lawyer of the Year” for 2010. Only a single lawyer in each legal specialty in each city is designated “Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers. He has been included in Best Lawyers for more than 25 years; in April 2009, he was among the attorneys honored at the Best Lawyers 25th Anniversary Event in Atlanta, GA.
Mr. Kaplan received both his undergraduate and law degrees from Vanderbilt University. He holds an LL.M. (in Taxation) from New York University. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Kaplan served as attorney-advisor to the Honorable Samuel B. Sterrett, Judge of the United States Tax Court, Washington, D.C. from 1972 through 1974.
Mr. Kaplan is a past president of the Tennessee Golf Association and is currently a director and serves on the TGA Executive Committee. He is a member of the Regional Affairs Committee of the United States Golf Association. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Golf Club of Tennessee and is a past president of Richland Country Club. Mr. Kaplan serves as a Board Member and Secretary of the Nashville Predators Foundation.
